History

The idea for Shonajhuri Resort emerged in early 2023 as part of a private eco-development initiative. The founders aimed to create an environmentally responsible retreat that promotes community-based tourism while preserving the region’s forest ecosystem. Construction began later that year, using locally sourced materials and renewable energy technologies.

Location

Shonajhuri Resort is situated about 120 kilometers northwest of Dhaka, on the eastern edge of the Modhupur Garh plateau. The area is characterized by dense forest, red soil, and rolling hills — a landscape rarely found elsewhere in central Bangladesh.

Natural Environment

The resort’s surroundings are dominated by Shonajhuri trees that turn golden in sunlight, creating the illusion of a forest shimmering in gold. A small lake runs along the southern boundary, attracting migratory birds in winter. The air remains filled with the fragrance of wildflowers and honey from local beekeepers.

Activities and Attractions

Visitors to Shonajhuri Resort can enjoy:

  • Forest trails for guided nature walks and cycling
  • Tree cottages with panoramic views of the forest canopy
  • Cultural evenings featuring local Baul and folk performances
  • Organic dining, serving food grown within the resort’s own gardens
  • Workshops on pottery, weaving, and traditional crafts

During monsoon season, small natural streams form across the property, adding to its scenic charm.

Sustainability

The resort operates entirely on solar energy and uses a rainwater harvesting system. Single-use plastics are banned, and all waste is composted or recycled. Local villagers make up over 80% of the staff, ensuring that economic benefits remain within the community.

Access

The resort can be reached by car or bus from Dhaka via the Dhaka–Tangail highway. From Tangail town, visitors can hire local transport or use the resort’s shuttle service. The journey takes about three hours.

Local Culture

The Modhupur area is home to Garo and Koch indigenous communities, whose traditional crafts and dances are featured in the resort’s cultural programs. Guests are encouraged to engage respectfully with the local culture and learn about traditional forest livelihoods.
